Play food

This week I also made taggie 'cookies' for the babies room at the child care center. None of my daughters work in that room but a close friend of my girls does, and a sweet friend to me as well.
These are made of the same recycled t shirt and cotton scraps that the fabric cookies were made of and I added clean potato chip packets for a crinkle sound.

Not to bad for my first taggies, I am sure the babies will love them.

Play food

My daughter Zoey asked for felt cookies for her pre-school room at her work. I enjoy making felt food and had seen this post here http://www.ikatbag.com/2013/03/confections.html?m=0 and here http://www.themotherhuddle.com/tutorial-felt-cut-out-cookies-with-frosting/ and had of course pinned the links for the tutorials.
I used a lid that was the size I wanted my cookies to be, allowing for a seam allowance. cut out 14 of them in case a few didn't work out as I am not to good at sewing circles.

I also researched (googled ) how to sew a circle on the machine and found this, http://thehabygoddess.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/use-thumb-tack-tape-to-sew-perfect.html and this one, http://cavernofcraftiness.com/sewing-round-in-circles/

I found a thumb tack, it was blunt and rusty, and I cleaned it up with sand paper, and taped it to my machine, after finding the middle of my cookies like this, and making sure the needle was in my seam allowance on my cookie.

And because my thumb tack was blunt I found it hard to push the bulky cookie mix onto it but once it was on it was fine,I used a small bull dog clip to hold it down after positioning the bulky sandwich of webbing and felt, and I sewed and sewed. The thumb tack trick worked, it wasn't perfect circles, and I had to adjust it and move the fabric a few times but my circles were a lot better than my previous attempts.
All done, now for the ladder stitching close. The back of the icing has iron on interfacing, to hide the back of my crazy stitching and all my knots.
I am very happy with the results, 14 iced cookies, 13 with a nice round shape and one that went a bit wonky so I made it look like a bite had been taken out of it .

3 icing bags out of cotton, interchangeable icings with sprinkles, and sore fingers from all that hand sewing. I am done :)

Play food

I thought I would try making 'sponge cakes' with sponges and caulk,  an idea I seen on Pinterest, (how I love that site) This is the link to the original 'sponge', although I didn't follow it exactly but it sparked an idea http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/965787/diy-cake-postcard-tutorial

They were quick to make apart from letting the caulk dry, but some sponges just didn't adhere to well to the caulk or the other way around, so I spent ages easing them fully apart and got out my trusty hot glue gun and re stuck them. I don't think they will handle a lot of play before they fall apart. They were sent to my beautiful niece and nephew, who will enjoy them and have wonderful pretend play with them.
I did get some strange looks packing them into the postage box at the post office lol.

Update...28/05/2015.....the sponge cakes are still being played with and there has been some little separation but nothing major..although they are very expensive to buy at the "Pop Up Coffee and Cake Shop" run by my niece and nephew :)

Felt food

I love making felt food, cupcakes being my favourite.
Two chocolate cupcakes with fancy icing!
Now they sit proudly in my china cabinet till I decide what to do with them.
A felt sandwich, lettuce, ham slice, tomato, egg slices, cucumber, and cheese.
Hungry anyone?

A long time between blogs :)

Even though I have not been blogging I have been quite busy crafting and stitching, felt food, play play, sock monkeys, kids dresses, pillow beds, the list goes on......

Here are a dozen fabric cookies I 'baked' today. Not felt because I wanted something washable and softer for younger children. These are going to my daughters room at an early childhood centre, all three of my girls are educators there, two working in the same room :). Hope they are tasty.
